Rag Rug Chairs

image1Sarah lives in Cornwall, on the image2edge of Bodmin Moor and is a mixed media artist of many years experience.  She has taught people various craft skills around the country for many years, these beautiful rag rug chairs being among them.   She also has various pieces of work in private collections around the world.

image5These robust chairs are made purely by hand, you don’t need any specialist tools or equipment.  Using beautiful fabrics torn into strips and wrapped around sisal rope you get a colourful, hardwearing basis for your chair.  By weaving them onto the frame of the chair in a traditional rush weaving style you will build up the corners of the seat and into the centre.  By varying the colours of the fabric you can build up a distinct pattern.

Sarah loves to use vintage or up-cycled fabrics.  They mean so much more, and often have a image4personal history attached to them.  One lady made a chair seat from fabrics she had collected on her travels around India, another made a beautiful brightly coloured chair with her daughter’s old summer dresses and ribbons.  These chairs become heirlooms and the family will love them !
